2) Communication Services and applications

The messaging service will only require the following information.

Username: a name that the user picks upon registration with the service. The only requirement is that the name cannot exist at the time the user registered.

The public key generated upon registration. This key is needed to enable others to send you encrypted messages. It cannot be used to decode messages.

If the user chooses to receive notifications about incoming messages, a unique device identification ("UDI") is needed. What exactly this is, depends on the notification service being used. This UDI is stored encrypted on the server. However, if the server gets compromised, the UDI could potentially be used to identify the phone and hence possibly the phone owner. It cannot be used to decrypt any messages sent to you or by you.

If the user chooses to give their phone number, a hash of this number is stored on the server. The number will never be stored in clear text, and hence is not visible on the server to us or other third parties.
